TORNADOES

YOU MUST BE PREPARED TO ACT QUICKLY IF A TORNADO HAS BEEN SPOTTED IN YOUR AREA

  • Tornadoes can happen anywhere in the US and at any time.
  • Listen to local TV and radio stations or your NOAA Weather Radio (make sure you have a hand-cranked or battery powered radio in case of a power outage).
  • Know what these weather terms mean:  Tornado Watch means there is a POSIBILITY of a tornado in your area.  Tornado Warning means a tornado is occurring (or has been spotted) in your area and you must take cover immediately.
  • Listen for Emergency Warning Sirens.  If you hear the siren, go to a storm cellar or basement if you have one, or take shelter in the lowest floor of your house in an interior room or hallway.  Stay away from doors, windows and outside walls.
  • If you are in a multi-story building, go to an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor.
  • If you are in your vehicle and no shelter is available, get out of your car and lie flat in a ditch or other low-lying area.  Do not get under a bridge or overpass.
  • Trailers and mobile homes do not offer enough protection from tornadoes.  If you do not have a storm cellar, you will need to get to another building with a strong foundation and walls.  It is imperative that you have a plan for what to do and where to go in case of a tornado.
  • When heading outdoors, check the weather forecast and watch for signs of approaching storms.
  • If severe weather threatens, check on the elderly and those with special needs.
