FOOD

YOU NEED TO HAVE AT LEAST 3 DAYS WORTH OF FOOD FOR EACH FAMILY MEMBER

  • The best types of food are shelf-stable foods that do not require cooking, e.g. canned vegetables and fruit, jellies and jams, peanut butter, dried fruits, nuts, soups, canned meats, crackers, cereals, cookies and powdered milk.  (All should be low sodium, if possible)
  • Make sure you include any special foods that family members might require, e.g. baby food and formula for infants, sugar free food for those with diabetes, etc.
  • Periodically check expiration dates on food you have stored (most food has an expiration date stamped on it somewhere).  Canned foods can be safely stored for 18 to 24 months.  Dry foods like crackers, cereals and cookies need to be used within 6 months.
  • Store food that you like and foods you need for special dietary considerations.  Store food in a cool, dry place, preferably in airtight containers to keep pests out.

TIP:  If there is a power outage, try to keep your refrigerator door closed as food will keep longer.  Food in a refrigerator starts to spoil after about 4 hours, but items in a freezer (if the door is kept closed) will be safe for about 2 days.
