FIRES

IF THERE IS A FIRE, DO NOT WASTE TIME GATHERING VALUABLES.  FIRES SPREAD QUICKLY AND CAN BECOME LIFE THREATENING IN JUST TWO MINUTES.

IF THE SMOKE ALARM GOES OFF OR YOU SEE A FIRE

The flames of a fire are dangerous, but the smoke and heat are even more dangerous and can sear your lungs.  Also, fires emit poisonous gases that can cause you to become dizzy, disoriented and can make you fall asleep (which can result in death by asphyxiation).  If there is a fire, the main thing for you to do is remain calm and get out.

  • If there is smoke coming under your door, find another escape route.
  • Feel the door with the back of your hand. If it is hot, find another escape route.
  • Crawl on the floor where the air is safer.
  • If your clothes catch fire STOP where you are, DROP to the ground and ROLL over and over to put the flames out.
  • Do not try to call 911 while you are in the burning building.  Get out and go to your designated meeting place, then call 911.
  • If you are trapped in a burning building, try to stay near a window and stay close to the floor (smoke and heat rise).  Call 911 and if possible, signal for help.

PLAN AND PREPARE BEFORE A FIRE HAPPENS

  • Make sure you have smoke alarms on every floor of your house.  Place them outside of bedrooms, on the ceiling or high on the wall.  Place them at the top of stairways or at the bottom of enclosed stairs and near (not in) the kitchen.
  • Test your smoke alarms once a month and replace batteries once a year.  A great way to remember to do this is when we turn our clocks back for daylight savings time (or when we turn them forward).  Replace your smoke alarm every 10 years.
  • Practice escape routes with your family and practice escaping from every room in your house.  Make sure everyone knows to get down low or crawl on the floor (where the air is safer in a fire).
  • Make sure windows are not nailed or painted shut.  If you have security bars/gates on windows, make sure they have a fire safety opening so they can be easily opened from the inside.
  • If you have a multi-level home you may want to purchase escape ladders.
