CHILDREN

MAKE SURE EACH CHILD HAS A GO BAG/EMERGENCY KIT AND KNOWS WHERE IT IS

  • Include your children in emergency planning.  Be sure they know their basic personal information and how to use a phone (esp. a pay phone) in an emergency.  Make sure they can dial 911 for an emergency and they know how to contact your out of area/ out of state emergency contact person.
  • Role play different emergency situations and practice escape and evacuation drills such as where to meet if the house is on fire and they have to escape by themselves; what to say when calling 911; what to do if they hear a warning siren, etc.
  • Make sure your child knows the family's meeting sites outside the house and outside the neighborhood or local area.
  • Tell children to never touch electrical poles or wires that are on the ground or wires hanging from the pole.
  • Do everything you can to prepare your child for an emergency.  When they know what to do, they are much less likely to panic which would be an even larger burden on you.
  • Request a copy of your child's school or daycare's emergency plan.
